The floor finishes of today are a much higher quality that do not yellow over time like products in the past. Poor maintenance and chemical reactions are usually the cause of a floor yellowing now. Some products produce a chemical reaction with the flooring which causes yellowing as well as soil build-up between layers.

Here are some of the causes and how to fix the yellowing effect.

Cause: Not cleaning a new cotton mop before applying finish. Cure: Thoroughly clean mops before using. Scrubbing will remove color and dirt.

Cause: Outside grit and dirt are ground into the floor finish. Cure: Using properly approved runners and mats.

Cause: Trailing of water behind the scrubber. Cure: Proper operator training and maintenance of equipment.

Cause: Using a dirty mop to pick up water left by the scrubber leaving dirt to be buffed in. Cure: Proper operator training and frequent water changes while using a clean mop.

Cause: The use of dirty buffing pads. Cure: Replace with fresh clean pads as needed.

Cause: Using improper amount of cleaner. Not enough cleaner will remove dirt while the use of too much will soften and damage the finish. Cure: Mix cleaners according to instructions.

Cause: The use of dust mops treated with oil which leaves dirt residues. Cure: Always use dust mops treated with paraffin.

Cause: The application of finish before scrub and rinse. Cure: Stripping and rinsing the floor needs done while the finish needs reapplied.

Always take proper care of the floor and it will remain yellow free for years to come.
